Same-sex marriage became legal in Puerto Rico on July 13, 2015, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges on June 26, 2015, which mandated the recognition of same-sex marriages nationwide.


Mission:

The mission of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in Puerto Rico has been to secure equal rights and protections for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This includes advocating for legal recognition of same-sex relationships, protection against discrimination, and the promotion of social acceptance and inclusion within Puerto Rican society.


Contribution to Puerto Rican Culture:

The legalization of same-sex marriage and the broader recognition of LGBTQ+ rights have had a profound impact on Puerto Rican culture:​

Legal Protections: The establishment of marriage equality has granted same-sex couples legal rights and benefits, such as inheritance rights and healthcare decision-making, strengthening the social fabric and affirming the commitment to equality.
