José Alvarado

Affectionately known as 'Grand Theft Alvarado,' hails from Brooklyn, New York. As the only active Puerto Rican player in the NBA, his remarkable journey—from being undrafted to becoming a cornerstone for both the New Orleans Pelicans and the Puerto Rican National Team—highlights his resilience, defensive brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the game. Jose is determined to be an inspiration to Puerto Ricans both on and off the court.

Whether it's leading the Puerto Rican National Team to the Olympics for the first time in two decades or showing young people that with hard work and determination, anything is possible, he carries the spirit and passion of Puerto Rico every day.

Quote:

"I’m truly humbled and grateful to be named 'Athlete of the Year' by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. To represent my Puerto Rican roots in such a meaningful way is a dream come true. This honor is not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me along the way. I carry the pride of Puerto Rico with me every day, and to be recognized like this is a reminder of how far we’ve come. I hope my journey inspires the next generation to chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles."
